BRADFORD school children are putting their own twist on Shakespeare this week as part of a national festival aimed at boosting literacy and aural skills, confidence and teamwork.

Hundreds of youngsters from schools across the district will be performing excerpts from Shakespeare plays throughout the week at the Alhambra Studio. The aim of the Shakespeare School Festival is to raise levels of spoken English and encourage creative writing.

Pupils at Horton Park Primary School in Bradford help to improve their education and social development through the ages-old game of chess.

It is one of the oldest and most enduring board games.

Dating back more than 1,000 years, chess continues to challenge and intrigue players and now the benefits of this strategic game are being explored in education – and with great benefits according to the chess experts who are instrumental in introducing chess into the classroom.

Nick Mullan, an accredited coach with charity Chess in Schools whose mission is to highlight the game’s educational and social benefits, has played on and off for years after learning it during his school days.

We have been successful in our bid to secure funding from Greggs and we are delighted to offer the first 40 children who attend breakfast club free breakfast every day. Items on offer are Toast, Juice, Cereal and Breakfast Cereal Bars. Breakfast club starts at 8am - 8.45am. Children who attend after this will be charged normal rate of 10p per item

This year the Year 6 children have taken part in the Market Challenge. This is an activity where they had to think of a new product and then present their idea to a group of professionals 'the Dragons' - this was held at Morrisons Headquarters. Our group named "Bahadur's M & Ms" was successful and have been chosen to sell their product on the Market day in Bradford town centre.

Our new Library was officially opened, by several of our sponsors, on 14th February 2014.

As a result of our exciting launch event the local poet and fellow of the Royal Society, John Siddique, is exploring a longer term connection with our school and the National Literacy Trust is involving us in a number of projects. These projects will give our children even better access to books and ensure they are able to read widely in order to foster their love of learning, progress in English and their general knowledge.
